Limestone Insights

Limestone is one of the most versatile and popular building materials in the world. It is made up of calcite from shells, coral, and other debris and is classified as a sedimentary rock. Limestone quarries are found all over the globe, from France and Egypt to the United Kingdom, China, Germany, and the United States. The largest quarry in the world is located in Rogers City, Michigan.

Limestone has been used for centuries. The Great Sphinx and the Great Pyramids of Egypt, the Arc de Triomphe in France, the Colosseum in Rome, and even the Pentagon are all clad in limestone. Not only does it add beauty and durability to any structure, but it is also easily restorable. This makes it a great investment that will continue to look beautiful for many years to come.

Care and Maintenance Services

Limestone Repair

Do you have chipped limestone tiles? Are there cracks in your floor or countertops? What about broken limestone tiles? Before you replace your limestone, consider having us provide expert limestone repair services. MarbleKare USA can fill holes in limestone, fix limestone cracks and chips, blending the repair site with the surrounding area, then honing or polishing it to match the finish on the rest of your limestone floor, countertop or other limestone surfaces.

Limestone Stain Removal

MarbleKare USA can remove most stains on your limestone. We can also guide you on treating stains yourself. (Refer to our Stain Management App.) The good news is that most stains can be successfully removed with no trace left behind.

Limestone Honing and Polishing

Are wear patterns, scratches, etches or spots dulling the once gorgeous surface of your limestone? MarbleKare USA can hone your limestone surfaces to eliminate these imperfections, resulting in a new surface free of damage.

Once damage is erased, we can polish your limestone using the appropriate diamonds or polishing powders to restore the finish you want, whether matte, semi-gloss or gloss finish.

Lippage Removal/Grinding

Are your tiles uneven? Do you want your tile floor flattened to the grout lines to create a more monolithic look and reduce trip hazards? MarbleKare USA can grind away the excess stone (a process called lippage removal) to create a flat, level surface using state-of-the art diamond grinding technology. Once flattened, the limestone is honed and polished to the finish you want.

Sealing & Protecting

Some natural stone types are more porous than others and the more porous the natural stone is, the more susceptible it is to staining. Once your limestone is cleaned and restored, MarbleKare USA may recommend you have us seal it to enhance its stain resistance. Sealing represents an inexpensive, preventive measure against stain damage because it buys you time to wipe up spills before they become stains.

Ongoing Maintenance

Does Limestone Require Ongoing Maintenance?

The short answer is yes, limestone does require maintenance. Regular cleaning with a stone safe cleaner is a great for simple day-to-day maintenance, but over time, floors can develop grout lines that just won’t come clean, shiny scratches, and increasingly obvious traffic patterns. Countertops can become scratched, dull and etched.
As these problems develop, you become more and more dissatisfied with the appearance of the floors or other granite surfaces until it’s time for another round of professional restoration. Ask us about customizing a regularly scheduled maintenance program to keep your granite looking great all the time, without the need for periodic restoration.
