In the 1950s and 60s, terrazzo was formed with marble chips and Portland cement as a binder. Modern terrazzo is formed using an epoxy binder and an incredibly diverse range of aggregate materials, ranging from the traditional marble chips to more contemporary materials like recycled glass and plastics.

Terrazzo Honing and Polishing

Our professional technicians are trained in the most effective terrazzo honing and polishing techniques. We begin by grinding away a very thin layer from the surface, essentially erasing almost any type of damage. From there, we polish to the desired look — from a soft, satin-like honed finish to a highly reflective, glossy polished finish.
With traffic and usage, terrazzo can get etched, scuffed, scratched, or otherwise damaged, resulting in an overall dull, dirty-looking appearance. In addition, improper cleaning methods can diminish the appearance of terrazzo.
Perhaps you have a polished terrazzo floor, but you prefer the softer, more subdued patina of a honed finish, or vice versa. MarbleKare USA can change the finish of your terrazzo. We can adjust the level of polish, giving your floor the custom appearance you have in mind.

Sealing and Protecting Terrazzo

Terrazzo is porous. Unsealed terrazzo can be susceptible to staining if certain spills or soiling material penetrate beneath the surface and go into the tiny pores. You may wish to have your terrazzo sealed to help protect against staining. We can provide this service for you. Sealing is not the same as applying a coating. A sealer guards against staining by filling the pores of both aggregate and binder so it becomes more difficult for staining agents to absorb into the terrazzo surface.
